A few notes on some oppurtunistic birding around west Knox County, TN:

A few Grasshopper Sparrows have taken up residence in the extensive
fields around the business park where I work off of Pellissippi
Parkway at the Hardin Valley exit. Go past NTRC (across Pellissippi
from Pellissippi State campus) to the top of the hill and listen.
Other birds in the area include Blue Grosbeak, Yellow-breasted Chat
Common Yellowthroat and Tree Swallows nesting in one of the birdboxes
beside NTRC.

The young Barred Owls have been making a rucus in the woods behind
our house in West Knoxville. It appears that Wood Thrushes are
going to nest in the woods as well; we didn't have them here last
summer. Another apparent new nester is Ruby-throated Hummingbird.
At least two females and one male are making frequent visits to the
feeder. Of course, I hadn't put up the feeder this time last year
so they could have been around then, too. Carolina Wrens have
started building a nest in one of our nest boxes. Surprisingly,
it's the old wren "cedar chalet" from Wal-Mart that I've had for
many years. Last year, chickadees built a nest in this box and
laid an egg before being evicted by bumble-type bees. Otherwise,
the only use it had ever gotten was to be filled with a dummy nest
by a House Wren and by House Sparrows which I let build just so
they would leave the bluebirds alone.

Recent new yard birds include our first flyover Rock Dove. I can't
believe it has taken almost 1 and 1/2 years to get Rock Dove given how
close we are to the Cedar Bluff area. The other new bird was a flyover
Belted Kingfisher. I had heard what I thought was a kingfisher on at
least two occassions last summer but didn't hear it clearly or see the
bird and, given how far we live from seemingly significant bodies of
water, I hadn't counted it yet. We're now up to 107.
