A followup on Carole Gobert's report of a Black Vulture in downtown Knoxville today. A coworker of mine also saw one today flying very close to the TVA office buildings in downtown Knoxville early this afternoon. Black Vultures have been fairly regular in downtown Knoxville for the last couple years. They started perching on the two very tall glass-faced office buildings at the south end of Gay Street. One of these office buildings has a few outside balconies on its upper floors and the office occupants next to one of these balconies started putting food scraps on the balcony for the vultures. Their joy at seeing the vultures was short-lived because the vultures quickly made a mess of the balcony, started pecking on furniture and the window moldings, and became pretty aggressive with their former feeders. Their food supply was cut off, strings were stretched across the balconies, and other measures to discourage them. Last I heard, the vultures no longer perch on the balconies, although there are still at least a couple hanging out downtown.
