I was contemplating the large group of bluebirds that live near my house, and assume they are an extended family group. I wondered when the young ones leave to find their own mates, and where and how do they do this? They seem to be social birds and it's hard to imagine one leaving the others, and striking out on its own to look for a new territory or mate. Also how do they attract one. I know males find a good house and tempt the female to build there, but I thought that was after they were already paired. I scrambled around on the Internet for a while to see if I could find an answer, but it only told me that the ones that migrate tend to mix with other family flocks in the winter. I think this is the same bunch here year-round. Any further info on how young bluebirds find each other and start a new family/territory would be appreciated. I have witnessed a ferocious battle in the grass over one of my nests several years ago. The female of one pair stayed on the ground near the fight and threw in a few licks of her own when she could find an opening. She was cheering her man on vocally, too. The other female stayed on a wire above and disdained to get involved. The pair that fought together won the nest (rightfully) but the victorious male was one bedraggled, roughed-up looking bird when it was all over!
