Charlie said: > Been seeing fledglings a bit lately: Also in Blount Co, I had a blue jay fledgling in the gravel driveway last weekend. It was making quite a racket, but not getting much attention. I eventually approached it because, well, getting attacked by blue jay parents is my idea of fun. Unfortunately, it didn't happen. I was able to get right next to the bird, whose flight feathers were the only ones to have broken their sheaths, and not get any reaction from any adults. I tried to get it to fly, but it just squawked, and I eventually picked it up to see if it could fly from my hand. It just flopped to the grass. I finally left it perched low in a dogwood, but I think it was a runt that had been abandoned. On a more happy note, I saw Carolina wren fledglings over two weeks ago, and this week saw an adult gathering nesting materials for a second brood. A mourning dove was also busy gathering straw, and an eastern bluebird fledgling was flying among the trees, still being fed by mom and dad. The blue-gray gnatcatchers were doing a lot of peeping and begging lately, but I haven't heard them in a few days. I prefer to think that means they are out and about learning from their parents how to forage. I've also heard begging noises from dense tangles with attentive cardinals nearby, and a pair of red-bellied woodpeckers has been very busy with their nest in a dead shortleaf pine. There is a pair of summer tanagers nesting in the yard, but no evidence of success yet.
