Had a pretty good day yesterday (10 June 2003) with 28 species in the yard (West Knoxville) with minimal effort, even missed at least a half-dozen regulars like Am Goldfinch and E Towhee. Highlights were three species which are new potential breeders. A Common Yellowthroat heard singing from vacant lots down the hill became yard bird #108. Summer Tanager and Yellow-billed Cuckoo made their first appearance outside of more typical migration dates. We have an Indigo Bunting making regular visits to our feeder this summer as well (missed him yesterday but got him today). I haven't noticed the female at the feeder but have seen her around. One of my latest endeavors is to identify moths. I've managed to pick up a few IDs from the Internet but if anyone has suggestions for ID resources, I'd love to hear about them. Right now, the most common species coming to our ligths at night is Lesser Maple Spanworm Moth which is odd since there are relatively few maples in our woods. Best recent sightings were Tulip Tree Beauty and another apparent but, as yet unIDed beauty sp., both on the same night (9 June 2003).
