Good distinction, Bill, between the life list and Big Year games, one bounded the other less so. For example, annual individual home run totals in baseball are compared directly in spite of changes in the strike zone, configuration of stadiums, etc. In bird listing, certainly splits, lumps, and introductions give people in some eras advantages or disadvantages. Same with the weather, air fares, whether or not Attu is accessible, etc. If you end the year with 745 countable under the rules and given the circumstances of that year, then that is your total. People don't attempt to recalculate Babe Ruth's home run totals given what would have happened if he played in modern stadiums with the present-day strike zone. Now for life lists, though, it is standard practice to retroactively count birds that were not countable at the time they were observed if their status changes. Many of us have gotten "lifers by mail" when AOU announced a species split. While no one is going to (ABA- legally) count a Hooded Crane for North America on a 2011 list, someone might (ABA-legally) be counting this same bird on a life list in a year or two if the various committees decide that way.
