Sunday afternoon (7 Aug) Amber and I were sitting at home when we heard a small bird fluttering against the window. It was going up to the corner of the window and raiding a spider web. It then flew over to the deck and landed on the hook with the hummer feeder... a favorite perch of the American Goldfinches... so it took a second to register as a male Hooded Warbler. He sat there for about 30 seconds flashing his tail and getting some nice 'oohs' and 'aahs'.
We've had some of the more flashier moth species at the lights recently including Ilia Underwing, Imperial Moth, Luna Moth, Laurel Sphinx and Plebian Sphinx as well as many of the less flashy, but still interesting ones like the Small Bird-dropping Moth. Unfortunately, the bats have discovered my setup and now make regular loops around the house patrolling for moths headed toward the lights. I've found it entertaining to squirt the water hose up into the air and watch the bats dive for it thinking they've found the mother of all gnat swarms... they catch on quick though and it only works a couple times each night.
