A juvenile Hooded Merganser just flew in and landed in the retention pond outside my office window in west Knox Co. The bird is very drab grayish brown with an underdeveloped hood, yellow bill, limited white in the wings visible at times. It was not raised here but perhaps was raised nearby. The Great Egret I reported from the same location on 3 July remains as well. Until recently, this retention pond did not hold water for any length of time. In mid-April, it was bushhogged and the debris (including some good-sized willow and Bradford pear trees) appears to have clogged and changed the drainage. It has held water ever since. So there are no fish in the pond but apparently enough frogs and tadpoles to keep the egret and 2-3 Green Herons happy. I regularly hear Eastern Narrow-mouthed Toads calling which is always nice.
