Yesterday morning (very early) I traveled 136 miles from Cookeville to Hickman County and conducted the Wrigley Breeding Bird Survey for the 20th consecutive year. The route is a nice one--I had 76 species yesterday including Red-headed Woodpecker, Warbling Vireo (3), Tree Swallow (ad. with 3 young), Cliff Swallow (3 stops), and 14 species of warblers (2 Ceruleans among 'em)--but the distance involved and a large number of other survey commitments closer to Cookeville have convinced me that it is time for me to hand this BBS route over to someone else, so if there is anyone out there who has good ear-birding skills and an interest in running this route, please contact the state BBS coordinator about having the route assigned to you. Twenty years ago Katherine Goospasture, the only other person ever to run this route, took me to the route and showed me each stop; I am willing to meet the lucky person who picks up this route and show him or her the stops anytime we can work out a good a good time to meet. Alternatively, I can mail you a copy of the route description if you will let me know you need it. I hope that the person who is assigned this route will not turn out to be a BBS butterfly, running the route just a short time and then flitting on to other things. BBS data are more valuable if the data from each route is collected by a person who runs the route many years in succession. I hope this will be the case with the Wrigley BBS route in the future.
