I make mine 2 parts water to 1 part sugar and have done extensive
research to back up this being a better mixture, research done by
scientists, not just "hummingbird experts". I have written this up and
have the references noted, so that you can look them up for yourself,
and make up your own mind. I contend that the 4/1 ratio is not as
helpful as the 2/1, but I do think that 1/1 is excessive. 2/1 makes a
33% solution which is a happy average of the hummingbirds preferred
flowers...

Hi, birders.
My husband and i were very surprised to hear, during the pledge-break
section of last night's PBS Nature about hummingbirds, that the
sugar-to-water ratio for nectar should be one-to-one. It was the
filmmaker who said it; her husband is an ornithologist. Do you think she
misspoke?? We've never heard there should be so much sugar, even in cold
weather.
