Great to see what everyone is seeing at the Pits! With the addition of
Long-billed Dowitcher, Ruddy Turnstone, and a Willet that was reported as well,
at least 23 species of shorebirds here since Saturday! Sure wish I could get
down there more often, you Memphis folks are so lucky to have this in your
backyard! (said in a very jealous tone....:")

Good Birding!!

 Hi Gail,

The Red Knot was there at 4:00 PM today. Most of the
 birds were in the
southern most pits. 34 Lesser Yellowlegs, 11 Greater
 Yellowlegs, 3 Sanderlings,
4 Baird’s Sandpipers and one Ruddy Turnstone. 13 Black
 Terns. Also two
Short-billed Dowitchers and one Long-billed Dowitcher. This
 was after the rain
 moved through.

 Cheers,

 Dick

 Just a
short note, to say I was unable to find the Red Knot in
 spite of searching from
just before 10:00 a.m. til almost 2 p.m. over all the Pits
 area and TVA Lake
with repeated passes. I did find a gaudy male Ruddy
 Turnstone with a mix
of other shorebirds (mostly Least, numerous Pectoral and
 Semipalmated, a few
 Western Sandpipers, plus two Baird's
Sandpipers I could identify, as well
 as Semipalmated Plovers and
the many Killdeer, and two Sanderlings), on the north side
 of the central levee,
the second pond from the west end.

The mix in the area seemed
essentially the same as Mike mentioned in his post
 yesterday, but I think there
must have been some movement out last night as I don't
 think there were as many
birds there today, though they are scattered all over and
 moving about. Mowers
in perimeter fields and a red-necked trackhoe (white body,
 long red arm and
bucket) digging on that central levee road when I first
 arrived had birds
darting all over the place. Later several hundred settled in
 those first two
ponds on the west end and north side of that central levee
 road, where I saw the
turnstone and where I think Terry and Mike saw the knot.
 Starlings almost
outnumbered the shorebirds. Black Terns continue as Mike
 described.

 On
one last pass by TVA Lake I ran into the McClendons
 (spelling?) from Knoxville,
and we didn't see the knot in the few minutes we looked.
 By then I was pressed
for time, but offered to show them where I had found the
 turnstone; it was still
there, but I was afraid to get out of the car to point it
 out, so I hope they
located it. I passed Tommie and Ron Rogers on my way out, at
 just before 2pm. I
didn't see any Wood Storks on the Riverport Rd. sloughs.

 I'll post a
 more complete report later.
