I have noticed a lot of fussy bird activity near a large dead tree in the woods behind our house (west Knox Co) the past couple of days. Sat evening (19 April) I spotted the reason during another mob scene. A raccoon was sleeping the day away in a large cavity near the top of the ~15-ft-tall snag. Only its back was visible from my angle. A few titmice and WB Nuthatches were fussing around the hole. Then one brave titmouse flew in and quickly smacked the raccoon on the back before darting back out. The racoon flinched and shifted position a bit. Emboldened, the titmouse returned for another quick strike, then another. Little response from the raccoon just pumped up the titmouse that much more. It flew in and landed on the raccoon's back, fussed a bit, than hopped up and down on the raccoon's back like a little kid trying to wake their parents. I thought it might have been trying to gather fur for a nest but it didn't appear to be pulling out fur with its bill (and they've been gathering pet fur I've put out for weeks now). Consigned to his fate and lack of respect from the titmouse, the raccoon paid little heed to the bird which eventually gave up and left.
