The large mixed roost is forming again at the Hardin Valley exit on Pellissippi Parkway in west Knox Co. Wed night (21 Oct) there were several thousand starlings, grackles, and robins coming to roost in the trees east of the parkway. Quite a spectacle but bring an umbrella. When they dispersed this morning, apparently a number of the robins decided to fly up the street a few miles to our woods. A young male Ruby-throated Hummingbird with a few red gorget feathers also showed up in the yard on Thurs morning. Spent most of its time hovering to catch insects, visiting the salvia, and chasing robins. The Ovenbird was back under the feeder for the 5th straight day. This is a new late date in the yard for Ovenbird.
