I don't often have unusual backyard birding at home in the Green Hills area of Nashville. Today was an exception. The movement of a bird landing on a window ledge three feet from where I was sitting got my attention @ 8:00 this morning. I did a double take when I realized it was a screech owl. It stayed on the ledge for almost 30 minutes. It faced inwards, it faced outwards. It preened. It closed its eyes and rested then it opened its eyes. At one point he really seemed to be staring at me as much as I was staring at him, but I doubt it really saw me through the double-paned glass. Finally, it flew off. I had never been a mere 3 feet from a screech owl and I did not have to go far to do it.
