I decided to have a go at the Mottled Duck today and arrived at TVA lake at 9 AM. I managed a fairly unsatisfactory view of the duck, and planned to try again later in the day. There were still thousands of shorebirds present on the sewage ponds, unfortunately the species diversity was low, most were Least and Pectoral Sandpipers. Also seen were a few Spotted, Western, Semipalms, one nice adult winter Baird's, one Solitary, a few Lesser legs, a few BN Stilts, and one crisp adult winter Wilson's Phalarope. Other than Killdeer, only Semi plovers were seen. After all that, a return to TVA Lake added nothing new other than 4 Caspian Terns, but the duck numbers were building. Fast food lunch and then another trip through the shorebirds and then back to the lake at 2:30 PM. No sign of the Mottled Duck, but after about 10 minutes, I was accosted by a female TVA security officer and advised that I must exit all TVA property. Despite all my efforts, she was unyielding, and I was forced to leave the area. I understood her to say that it was a result of the current terror alert status? At any rate, wanted to warn anyone making an effort to see the duck that there is a chance that the authorities may intervene!
