This occurs mainly when chased by the neighborhood dogs. It's struggle and their awkward run is as long or as short as it has to be, in proportion to the speed and agility of the dog;o) Red-throated Loons nest on small ponds and marshes, they can lift into the air directly from water, like Mallards and other puddle ducks, with a powerful down stroke pushing against the waters surface. They also have been observed taking off from land in the same manner. This is the only loon that can do so. In many ways Red-throated are a very different breed in actions, habits and structure from the other loons. Good Birding !!! Jeff R.
