Ran home (west Knox Co.) for lunch today (25 Aug) and found a nice wave of migrants just as I had sat down and taken my first bite.
A female-type SCARLET TANAGER decided to taste-test the still-green Black Gum fruit. There's a bumper crop this year after last year's bust so I'm looking forward to lots of thrushes about this time next month. I only saw it eat one so I'd say they didn't taste too good yet.
While watching the tanager, a "Big Orange" flash crossed between us in hot pursuit of a robin ... kinda like a UT linebacker after a quarterback... 9 days and counting. Anyway, this flash of orange was an adult male BALTIMORE ORIOLE.
Later a flash of yellow flew up from the ground near the feeder chasing off a House Finch. That seemed a little deja vu-ish and, sure enough, it was the KENTUCKY WARBLER from yesterday.
Also had 2-4 BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHERS whirling around.
Among the "locals", I had a SONG SPARROW tending a baby BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD which seems on the later side of normal for baby cowbirds.
All the locals are looking pretty ratty so it was nice to see some neatly preened and fully molted birds for a change.
