Had three nice sightings in the yard today (20 Feb 2003, West Knoxville). At lunch, the male Pine Warbler from the pine thicket up the road made one of his rare appearances in our yard and visited the feeder to pick at sunflower hearts... didn't try the suet though. That's a first for me, never had a Pine Warbler at the feeder. Later, as I headed back to work, he was singing. Tonight, I went out to bring in Eeyore the vicious Basset Hound and heard a very un-nerving scream from the woods... like a small woodland creature being tortured to death. I immediately thought 'owl' but it was different from the Barn Owls I'm familiar with at my parents' house. I got the flashlight and tried to spot them but they moved off down the hill. I had never heard anything quite like this but have had Great Horned Owls here last month and Barred Owls last year. Listened to the Stokes CD guide and was able to match what I heard with the begging cry of fledgling Great Horned Owls. Finally, while listening for the owls, I heard a Killdeer. No, not Earth-shattering news but a good bird for our yard.
