I'm posting this on behalf of Melinda Welton. Chris Sloan ________________________________ Dear all Thanks for all the well wishes. A few of you have asked about what went on so, here are some of the details. Monday morning, May 16th, after two nights of agony, I was operated on for a ruptured appendix! It all turned out well but a few more hours and apparently, I wouldn=B9t be writing this email to you! Here=B9s what happened. (I=B9d want to know if it had been you!) I was = in the field on Saturday doing Cerulean surveys in remote Hickman County and managed to get myself to a hotel in the early evening after I started to feel nauseas. The only thing I could imagine was that there was something in the creek water that I had boiled and drank 40 minutes before the nausea started. Well, I violently vomited all night. Miraculously, I felt strong enough in the morning to drive myself the hour and a half home. The cramping started again about an hour into the drive but I got there. When John got home he took me to the emergency room =AD for the first time. The doctor at the ER had no idea what was wrong. I had no fever. They put me on a drip to re-hydrate me and said that that should help my cramps. Even though it didn=B9t, they sent me home. (I had no idea that vomiting was a symptom of appendicitis and I have no idea what information ruled out that possibility for them.) They sent me home, I slept some and then the relentless pain started at 4am. John drove his moaning wife back to the ER. This time they did a cat scan (is that how you spell it?) and found that the appendix had ruptured. They did emergency surgery and here I am. They let me out of the hospital on the 19th. I=B9m off heavy pain medication now =AD still = on antibiotics - and moving around fine. =20 One good thing =AD besides all the well wishes from my friends - is = coming back home with a renewed sense of awe at how beautiful it is around here =AD and how incredibly lucky I am that I wasn=B9t on a mountain top in Honduras when this thing started!!! Maybe next week I can get back to work. I know, I know, don=B9t push it. I=B9ll be careful but the season is short and I want to do what I can before the birds leave! Cheers And happy to be here!!
