I just had a flyover sighting of a white-phase great blue heron in South
Knox Co. It flew out of the east heading toward the river. I got a good
look, albeit without binoculars, and the size, posture and wingbeats were
all consistent with GBHE. I did not, however, have the checklist of leg and
bill colors fresh in mind to distinguish between GBHE and great egret, so
now I'm wishing I had taken note of those things. It did not have the
high-contrast black legs of a great egret, but that's all I can say for
sure. Having visited Naples, FL several times in recent years, I have seen
a "great white heron" there as well as many great egrets. I'm fairly
confident in my ability to recognize both birds, but obviously we are a
long way from where white great blues are common.

Knox area birders should be on the lookout for this bird!
