I often jump woodcock in the cut over corn and bean fields around my house.
This evening I was crossing one at dusk, trying not to trip over the
stubble when I heard the woodcock's nasal ground call that sounds so much
like nighthawk. I stopped to listen, and sure enough, heard him lift off
chittering, and then a moment later come falling back through the darkening
sky. I heard two other woodcocks in the same field doing the ground call,
but didn't hear them peform the aerial dance.

Spring may seem far away by the calendar, but already the days are a bit
longer, and the birds are thinking of courtship. Heard a titmouse trying
out his spring song just the other day.
