There is no tape support if you're using a JiffyDOS kernal. JiffyDOS
occupies space where the tape routines were.

Just in case anybody else cares - and for reference using the screen grabs
in my original post, the SID was bad. That's what I know so far.
Everything operates as normal when booted without the SID and I have
popped in a Swinsid nano for now - for testing - and the sound is also
back. I am aware that the swinsid does not support the mouse/trackball
functions. However, I have another remaining issue - the datasette is no
longer considered present. Is this somehow related to the swinsid?
Both CIA have been swapped - no change. Power supply has been swapped and
tested as good also. The joysticks work perfectly. The floppy works
perfectly. The pins on the cassette port have been cleaned. The datasette
works perfectly on my vic20.
I type LOAD - I get DEVICE NOT PRESENT.
I will be swapping the PLA when a spare arrives - but should I be looking
in another direction?

I have had various chips go on my vics and 64s due to static and careless
me. Trial and error was the way I solved them with spares. Easy when you
have spares. Rarely do I resort to scopes and meters. I was hoping for a
lucky break : that it was obvious to more experienced commodore people.
Eventually I will track it down. It’s part of the fun!

Tonight, after an attempt to output s-video and/or composite to a video
recorder interface (signal was never stable into the interface but that's a

Unfortunately, with all of my connecting and disconnecting various
cables, I seemed to have zapped a chip(?)
The first foul boot (and subsequent abandonment of my video recording
project) was a black screen with a scrolling white bar (kind of like a SID
fail?) but that did not remain...
The little RCA TV is the RF out (no difference from rgb out really -
although the symptoms vary each re-boot - the character filled screen has
not re-appeared)
The horizontal bar scrolls from the bottom up...
It seems like sometimes the character rom is unhappy also.
I knew I should not have sold all my spare breadbins this past summer :-(
