Yeah, unfortunately that sometimes happens when power is applied after a long
time asleep; dried-out capacitors fail after a while, ICs can't stand the
stress, etc.

Oh boy.
He just went dark. The screen isn't responding at all. I read the voltage off
the side Tape Drive Port and its getting +5 Volts. I was pretty surprised the
monitor was working initially. Normally after shutting the PET down, the CRT
fades to the Dot. Nothing when you turn on or Turn off.
I've left him off for a little while to take breather.

I figured out why mail seems to be going back and forth funny. My VPN
connection (to Europe) has some funky mxrecords for my domain. My email server
gets a larger batch of IP's as a reference and ends up getting blocked by the
freelists.org server. I got a batch of emails telling me it's getting block
because it can't verify the address. Arg. So I just have to remember to turn
off the VPN client for the time being until I figure out why my VPN's network
gets a larger set of MX records.
Anyways.
I moved the last two chips one by one in into video ram, and I got some
great PET Video Art. Which basically says, they are both bad. Correct?

Might just be one; try POKEing 0 and 255 into any location between 6144 and
7167 and PEEK it back; that should tell you.
The early BASIC restricted where you could PEEK/POKE, but I assume it
excluded a specific upper area and included at least the lower 8K regardless of
how much was functional.
If you get it down to one chip I could drop off a replacement; send me your

After the Active Surplus Dentist kit, I got 6143 J
After a little back and forth between the slots it looks like I have 2
bad chips.
I noticed the second last pair had some funky stuff in the socket, with a
little elbow grease and dentist pick I managed to clean the pin receptacles.

5119 is the maximum ram I am getting. Looks like 4 chips are bad or the

This machine is turning into FrankenMonster, I really don't mind looks -
more into getting him in the best possible shape internally. So if I can get
the ROMs and RAM up to date, that would be great. I don't mind spending some
money on him, I've never had a functioning PET before and there are some many
programs I have sitting around from a long time ago. My grade school had 4 of
them and a 4040, my dad who was teacher at another school would sneak one home
for the summer. PET's were my first intro to programming.. there was a miner
game that I heavily modified and would like to see again J

Hi Wolfgang,
Sounds like you've got at least one bad RAM chip or socket; fortunately
the 320132 board uses 2114s, which are still relatively easy to find.
The lower 2K are working, so try removing the 3rd pair of RAM chips (I6 &
J6) and replacing it with the last pair (I1 & J1); with luck you'll get it up
to 6143 bytes free or even the full 7167 if it's a poor socket.
One way of testing RAM chips if the system is working is to leave a good
pair in I/J7 & I/J8 needed to run, pull one of the video RAM chips (C3 or C4),
and one by one replace it with the chip you want to test.
And yes, there are several ways of upgrading the ROMs, depending on how
much you want to spend and whether you care how it looks.

I've got a PET 2001-8 that recently came back to life.
I was out drinking with friends (around 2001), I stumbled while walking
downtown over this PET. I took the PET home (I still live downtown) which was
really in bad shape. His Exterior was rusted and his chassis was impossible to
open. Someone had cut off his power cord too.
He got put into storage with Family for a while (I moved around a lot).
And not so long ago, (well this week) I got him back. I had to cut the screws
to the lid, popped the top and looked inside. At some point the chassis became
the home of some creatures, which I cleaned out the remnants of the nest.
The mainboard was in decent shape, and after everything was clean and
chips pressed into place I powered him up. The screen actually worked and I got
some random garbage for a second. After a few checks on the MB I soldered a few
spots and restarted him. He works.
After looking inside it, I noticed the Logic Assembly Part Number is
320132. The exterior doesn't have the chicklets, or the tape drive, it's a 9"
monitor with the PET ASCII Keyboard (minus the CAPSLOCK when I found it). He
also reports:
*** COMMODORE BASIC ***
1023 BYTES FREE
Which by the *** and model number 2001-8 he's got original ROM's.
But doesn't that also mean 2001-8 should have ~8K free (7167)?

Any thoughts on the RAM? All of the chips are populated, maybe this was
scavenged before being discarded.
If I recall, the ROM's in early revision 2001's can't go to Basic 4 but
2/3 is available correct? Well if I can get ROM's that is.
I do recall at the one or two TPUG meetings that I did attend and the
WOC, someone mentioned a modern ROM upgrade. Are these still around?
