We track the passing of the 1,000th bird at College Creek Hawkwatch, in
James City County, each year to gauge how the migration is progressing and
today we reached that mark, on the second-earliest date ever in our 17
years. A Turkey Vulture was the exact bird, but a 3rd year Bald Eagle just
missed at 999 and a Black Vulture was 1,001. Bill Williams and Tom Armour were
also on hand at the site.
The season total was boosted by two excellent days in early March, but we
didn't see the usual "equinox flight," a few day time period where we often
see our largest numbers of the season.
