Just wanted to report my first Field Sparrow of the year singing in a field
where I hear one every year. However, I am sorry to say this field is fast
becoming forest. By the way, the Field Sparrow sang a typical song, but also
a strange variation on it I've not heard before.
The same field has hosted woodcocks for many years, and every year now I fear
not hearing one there. To my very delighted surprise though, I heard 2(!!)
this morning just before sunrise. Made my day!
Saw a Winter Wren March 6, trying to get up the nerve to enter the shelter box
where both (instead of just one) of the Carolina Wrens might have been because
it went to the opening twice, but seemed concerned about entering. I figure
there may not have been enough space for the Winter Wren to keep enough
distance between it and the wren(s?) in there. It left and I wasn't able to
watch until dark, so I don't know if it ever returned to go in, or not.
First big Wood Frog day was March 10, although I have had a few here on many
days, even rather chilly ones, since February 8, the first day they started
calling. The first eggs were laid in my ponds on February 25.
"My" pair of Wood Ducks that have used my "owl" box the past 2 years first
showed up on February 23, much earlier than in the past!
Sincerely,
Marlene
