Post-breeding dispersal indeed, the last two mornings have brought an
onslaught of Great Blue Herons to the bank of the Rappahannock River where I
live in Richmond County. Usually I see one rather cranky individual who
squawks and screeches as it moves from place to place. Surprisingly there
was a high count of 8 Great Blue Herons yesterday morning. Several were
perched on the docks and on the shore. One made the mistake of landing on
the empty Osprey nest and was driven off immediately by Ollie and Olivia.
One perched on the captain's seat of my neighbor's boat, and one landed on
the boat line between the dock and a post and stayed there swaying
gracefully back and forth for a short while.
