Buoyed by our good warbler sightings yesterday, Rich Rieger and I headed
back to Huntley Meadows back side for another go this morning. We were not
disappointed as we once again found 8 species of warblers and several other
warblers shall remain "unidentified". New today were Chestnut-sided, Canada
(positive ID today), and Black-throated Green. Most of the warbler activity
today was at the very first meadow in the trees across the road from the
dead pines. A very active mixed flock was feeding, some very high and washed
out by harsh morning sun. We stayed in that spot for 45 minutes or more and
kept finding more birds. Except for the Black and Whites, all of the other
warbler species listed below were seen in that spot. We were joined by Mark,
another birder after we passed the hotspot. The "Woodcock meadow" was not
nearly so active today, and we failed to fine the Blue Grosbeaks from
yesterday. Mark espied a Brown Thrasher in that field, not seen yesterday.
No swallows or swifts were seen. We also found 2 House Wrens in that field,
not seen yesterday. Hummingbirds were extremely active, and my count of 12
may be somewhat conservative. Complete list below.
