I have decided that there is no where else in the world that I would rather
be than in Highland County today. This has been an 8 eagle day, without
even trying. Living in the Blue Grass valley is so different than being on
top of Bear Moutain. During the 3 years of hawk watching up there, I always
saw eagles in migration, both bald and golden. But here in the valley, it's
hard to tell just what they are doing. Of the birds I saw today, not one
was heading south. And why should they? It is one of those glorious days
where no one would want to head any other direction! Here is my account:
12:30 saw 2 mature BAEAs and 1 mature GOEA circling rather low near Devil's
Backbone near Blue Grass. There was also a young Bald, not able to identify
exactly, but probably a 3 year bird. (This is the one day I cleaned out the
car and didn't have my binocs with me). There was also a No. Harrier,
Red-tail and 1 other raptor (unidentified) in the swirl.
1:00 saw one mature BAEA right over my house south of New Hamden. It
circled, then headed to the west.
3:30 Also at my house, saw 3 mature BAEAs right over my head, flying low,
interacting and making plenty of their little pathetic cries. THey circled
to great heights and I lost them. Who knows what else I'll see before the
sun goes down!
