This morning I had two species in Americana Park, Fairfax - its a small
playing field at NE corner of better known Wakefield Park - that are a shade
early (according to the Yellow Book):
Sharp-shinned Hawk - an immature bird (probably male, very small), perched,
being mobbed by crows.
Mourning Warbler - also an immature bird. This location is one where we
usually find Mourning Warblers in the fall. Strangely, the Yellow Book gives
an
extreme early date for the Piedmont of Aug 30. Yet that date for the Coastal
Plain is Aug 19, and for the Mountains and Valleys is Aug 25. These three
regions are pretyy close together in northern Virginia, of course, and this
Park,
though technically in the Piedmont is extremely close to the Coastal Plain.
