I am kind of inclined to think that the eagle's are on young at this time
because of the
behavior of mom and pop on the nest. However the newly opened leaves are
starting to
obscure observations.
When I first arrived, the eagle that was on the nest seemed to be
maneuvering her head
down into the nest a fair amount. This probably indicates that she is
either on eggs
or young hatchlings at this time.
I saw one eagle, after it traded off nest duties, do ripping motions with
its head which
certainly verifies a catch of one kind or another*
* For those new to these bald eagle behavior; aside from fish, these birds
also will take weakened or dead waterfowl from time to time.
One Thanksgiving Sunday at Great Falls park, I watched a bald eagle, across
the river, enjoying it's own
feast by ripping into a dead adult goose. As healthy adult geese are very
feisty, I am sure
that it got hold of a diseased or an old one.
