I was at Accotink Bay this morning from about 7:30 til 10:00. I mainly
worked the trees along the water south of the archery range and south of the
vertical barriers on the road parallel to the water. Yellow rumps were
everywhere. Either 20 y rumps were consistently working the trees or there
totaled well over 100 during the two and a half hours.
A few other migrants were found: Tennessee, Nashville, pine, palm, northern
parula, scarlet tanager, and rc kinglet. The activity kicked off about 7:30
but it takes til 8:00 before the sun hits the trees and accelerates the
feeding. More eyes would no doubt have picked up additional species.
For my photography purposes, Accotink bay works well as the sun hits the
targets and I can get reasonably close to the birds. Most times I visit
Accotink Bay, I find the number of species to be much less than Leesylvania,
Occoquan, Dyke Marsh, or Monticello.
