Having been reminded by my wife that it is my month to do the commissary
run, I took my birding gear and headed to Accotink Bay Wildlife Refuge on
Ft. Belvoir before the "fun stuff". Most of the birding was done from the
top of the hill approaching the bay (down to the Archery Range) and then
looping around the back going out. Best bird was a vocalizing Least
Flycatcher on Basin Trail by the Archery Range. It did it's incessant
"che-bek" about 10 times in a row and then moved on. Other surprises were 7
Red-breasted Mergansers (female) and 5 American Widgeon (2 male, 3 female)
on the water. There were also 3 Least SP with a Spotted and Solitary. My
good fortune with Cape May Warblers continues, as I had one perch atop a
bare tree for about 5 seconds and then continue to vocalize in the area.
Only 9 species of Warbler, but 3 Blackpolls were FOS for me. 3 Blue
Grosbeaks were seem and one RB Grosbeak (female). Good looks at Baltimore
Orioles were a nice treat. When I did my list I was surprised that in only 2
hours I had 65 species, by far my best ever at that location.
Looking forward to Possum Point tomorrow morning with Rich Rieger. We hope
the rain does not dampen our birding.
