The highlight of our visit to Accotink Bay and Gunston Cove this morning was
139 Tundra Swans at the north end of the bay. Also observed:
Red-Tailed Hawk (in the clearing at the top of the hill, off Warren Road)
Northern Cardinal
Fish Crow
Lesser Scaup
Song Sparrow
Northern Mockingbird
Bald Eagle (many, a few attempting to grapple talons)
American Coot (a sizeable crowd)
Ring-necked Duck
Canvasback
Mourning Dove
Carolina Wren
Turkey Vulture
Boat-tailed Grackle
Canada Goose
Ruddy Duck
Ring-billed Gull
Carolina Chickadee
Tundra Swan (139)
Great Blue Heron
Common Merganser (25)
Tree Swallow (1)
American Black Duck
Observation points: On the Ft. Belvoir side, from the parking lot near the
fuel cell research facility (Gunston Cove) to the archery range (Accotink Bay).
