Greetings VAbirders!
Best wishes to all of you doing CBCs this year, hope you get lots of
species and lots of each species....well except maybe not Starlings, House
Sparrows, and Rodos. ;-)
I ran into Victoria Dawson, one
of the writers for SMITHSONIAN magazine. She spotted me lurking near the
Magnolia with my binoculars and said, "You're not looking for the
hummingbirds, are you?" I said, "Why, yes, I am!" She mentioned that
they are considering writing a little blurb about the hummers, and I of
courseencouraged her in this endeavor.<g>
Laura,
This is great news, for this is a wonderful way to educate people about
wintering hummers. If possible, please direct Victoria to people who know
the REAL facts about hummers, and especially wintering hummers in the
east. People like Scott Weidensaul and Bob Sargent. Scott, author of
books such as Living On The Wind also writes for Smithsonian, so he'd be
the first person she should contact. And Bob, if he isn't in Ecuador or
some other hummerful place right now, is the second. Both of them know
hummers and both are excellent teachers. It would be refreshing to see an
ACCURATE hummingbird article for a change. Many times the folks who write
hummer articles know very little about hummers, and don't bother to find
out the facts from folks who DO know.
Please encourage Victoria to contact them before writing the article. If
you need emails for them, let me know and I'll pass them along.
