Today at Hog Island WMA in Surry County, I was joined by my good friend,
10 year old Joey Olszewski from Long Branch, NJ. As we were nearing the
north end of the peninsula, Joey said "What's that big bird over
there?" Fully expecting it to be one of the many Great Blue Herons that
were there, I was surprised to find that the bird was actually an
AMERICAN WHITE PELICAN. We parked the car and walked out into the
fields at the north end opposite the observation tower where we were
rewarded with terrific looks of the bird as it floated around in the
water. We also got to see it in flight when a group of CASPIAN TERNS
decided to harass it. Joey was very impressed as it flew directly over
our heads a couple of times trying to evade the terns. Unfortunately,
we were not able to find any of the target "grasspipers" but we were not
disappointed. Other birds seen included LEAST and FORSTER'S TERNS,
LEAST and SEMIPALMATED SANDPIPERS and both GREATER and LESSER
YELLOWLEGS. Good birding.
