While driving south on I-95 today at approximately 4:50pm, I saw an Anhinga,
heading west, fly across the interstate. The bird was just above treetop
height, with the long tail seen clearly (about as long as the head and neck).
My first impression was that the bird was possibly a Wood Stork due to its
flight behavior (labored flight). I realized, after a longer look, that the
bird was an Anhinga and must have recently taken flight and was attempting to
gain height. Due to poor light conditions, I could not pick up any color on the
bird. This location is approximately two miles north of Exit 33, in Prince
George County, close to the county border with Sussex County. I drove back to
the area, via a side road, but could not refind the Anhinga. There is a small,
open swamp on the west side of I-95 here (not very visible from the interstate).
