Hi all,
David Clark's observations hold a lot of promise for a nesting pair of
Anhingas. During 1981-1983, years of a substantial invasion of Anhingas,
Butch Pearce watched extensive courtship of Anhingas at Stumpy Lake,
including all the stereotyped wing-waving and stick presentation of the adult
male to the female. Because boats are not permitted on this reservoir, it
might take a little luck to spot the nest of this species, but sometimes,
they nest conspicuously in Bald Cypress right out in the middle of a lake,
even on bustling golf courses. If you're down at Stumpy Lake (remember if on
the golf course side to ask permission at the club house, nicely), watch for
the big stick nest -- it would be a first confirmed nesting record for
Virginia and the northernmost record anywhere, I think, a red-letter event
indeed.
