Greetings,
On US 17 today near the place called Lois there was an immature dark
Rough-legged Hawk hunting over a field on the west side of the road. This was
directly across from Hugo's Roller Skating Rink, designated by a giant white
roller
skate with red wheels on the east side of the road. I spotted the hawk while
driving south, doubled back and observed it at length from Hugo's.
This is at least the second and probably the third dark Rough-legged since 12
December in Fauquier and Prince William Counties. Overall I know of probably
four RLHA in Fauquier between 12-23 December, four in Prince William, the
first on 10 December, and hopefully sightings through at least 21 December, one
in Fairfax on 13 December, and one in Culpeper on 21 December. Why the
slackers up in Loudoun haven't found any yet is beyond me. I'm guessing
everyone is
busy, and Ian Topolsky doesn't know what one looks like.
There were 60 American Pipits getting flushed by the Rough-legged and
Red-taileds hunting this field.
To get here, take US 17 south from US 29 about eight miles, and the Lois
Volunteer Fire Department is on the left. Hugo's is just past it. From where
US
17 intersects Route 28 at Bealeton, it's about five miles or so. Watch your
speed, as I got pulled over today not far from this location, but was spared a
ticket.
Cheers,
Todd
