This late report accompanies my earlier one today that covered Orchard Trail in
Appomattox-Buckingham State Forest, part of the Central Piedmont Important Bird
Area. Trout Trail at both ends was heavily overgrown with vegetation so I was
only able to cover a portion of it. But highlights for me included a pair of
Kentucky Warblers, a fledgling Louisiana Waterthrush being attended to, a
Belted Kingfisher along the small creek in heavily wooded terrain, the two
buteos, and a female hummingbird in the beginning stages of nest building in a
small sycamore. She was making continual forays for nesting material for the
20 minutes that I watched her late in the afternoon, being gone for about 30-60
seconds each time and then spending about 15-30 seconds each time building the
materials into the beginning of a nest base on a small limb about 1 ½ inches in
diameter. Some trips for material were made in a consistent direction, but I
usually could not see exactly where she was going because of the leaves, and
trips were also taken in different directions. Once she went up into the
canopy of the nest tree and collected white fuzz from the sycamore leaves.
Other times it looked like she might have bits of lichen, but sometimes the
material was barely visible; I was watching with a 22x scope from about 30 feet
away and she was about 30 feet up. She would often wipe the materials onto the
nest platform from her bill, and frequently fluttered her wings while doing
this. This State Forest is just north of Holiday Lake State Park, 11 miles ENE
of the City of Appomattox. The Red-headed Woodpecker was at the Woolridge
Wayside picnic area on Rt 640 at the north end of the trail.
