Hello all
Yesterday Penny Warren & I ( Allen Larner ) spent a total of 15hrs in the
field & driving a total of 211 miles searching for birds to add to our
counts for our Clubs annual BIG SPRING DAY .We started our day at 4 am by
going out to look for Rails but we dipped on them but the clouds broke
enough to see the "Super Moon " setting over the South River Perserve .
Neat to see . We ended our day with 116 species of birds & most of our
birding was in the Mountains . Our area to cover was what was the left overs
which included Shenanadoah Mt. , Elkhorn Lake -- Staunton Dam , Staurts
Drafts South River Perserve , On the property where Smith's pond is in
Swoope * ( * this property is private & I have permission to bird it ) ,
MCCume's Pond in Fishersville , Down town Staunton . Our Best birds for the
day are Blue - winged Teal , Ruffed Grouse , Pied - billed Grebe , Horned
Grebe , Barn & Great Horned Owl ,All Woodpeckers except for the Sapsucker ,
Alder & Willow Flycatcher ( South River Perserve ),Black - capped Chickadee
& Red - Breasted Nuthatch ( road going to Elk Horn Lake ), 20 species of
Warblers best being Northern Water Thrush , White Throated & White Crown
Sparrow . A full report will follow when all reports are turned in . A
