Comments: This was the breeding bird survey point count for Audubon Society
of Northern Virginia at 12 sites at Oakmarr/Tattersall park in Oakton. Each
site was observed for 5 minutes. Unless noted otherwise, the total is from only
those sites. Because most sites were woodland, within hearing (and sometimes
within sight) of backyards, campus, and a golf course, a mix of woodland and
non-woodland birds were noted. Also single chipmunks were heard at two sites
and 5 wt deer were seen at two sites. This same area has been surveyed every
year since 1997. Especially notable is the lack of ovenbirds and the decline of
wood thrushes. A pine warbler and orchard oriole may also be here as they have
been heard repeatedly earlier in the season, but they were not evident today.
The Blackpoll warbler heard at the woods corner near hole 1 of the golf course
is certainly a lingering migrant.
