At dusk for the last three days, Monday-Wednesday, I counted the number of
Black-crowns visible on the wing over Chincoteague Channel at the south end
of Main Street near Beebe Road. Each evening was clear although the wind was
moderate out of the south on both Monday and Wednesday. Thirty-two birds
were seen Monday; sixty-eight on Tuesday and thirty-three on Wednesday. No
Yellow-crowns were sighted.
When first spotted, all BCNHs were flying at an elevation of less than 100
feet in a westerly direction. I infer that the birds are roosting in what
remain of the pine and shrubs on some of the campgrounds at the extreme
south end of the Island. I have seen the birds roost in such places along
South Main in the Spring/Summer/Fall but the birds are roosting elsewhere
just now.
Most of the BCNHs continue on their westerly course and set down on the
saltmarsh islands along Queen Sound and the west side of Chincoteague
Channel. Others, approx one-third the past three nights, turn north and fly
along Main Street and the Channel, some directly over my position, a few
calling in flight. Several have been seen to land among the various piers
which line the Channel to the north. The presence of three, dusk feeding
Great-blue Herons near my immediate observation position may discourage
BCNHs from landing in the immediate area. Peter Doherty
