VA-birders,
Dave Hewitt, my husband Lee and I explored Greensprings Nature Trail behind
Jamestown High School in Williamsburg today, March 24. We had lots of birds and
great diversity (54 species) even though we didn't start until almost 11:00.
Mostly sunny skies and temp around 70 made excellent birding conditions.
Complete list from eBird follows, but highlights included:
- Our first Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and Common Yellowthroat of the season
- Up-close looks at several pairs of Green-winged Teal (from the new biking
boardwalk)
- Abundance of woodpeckers, with spectacular looks at Red-Headed Woodpeckers in
direct sunlight
- Clear views of numerous Swamp Sparrows
- 5 Cedar Waxwings flying overhead just after we arrived in the parking lot
- 4 Northern Rough-winged Swallows flying overhead as we were getting ready to
leave
