It's shaping up to be a great winter in the south-central Piedmont since
we've already seen amazing waterfowl diversity around the Farmville area as
very cold temperatures persist creating limited open water.

A single TUNDRA SWAN showed up at Sandy River Reservoir on January 2nd and
stayed for two days.

Five GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE then appeared at Sandy River Reservoir on
January 4th and were last seen on the 9th as the ice thawed during the warm
spell. The third regional record and first county record.

While checking out the continuing Common Mergansers, Redhead, and
Canvasback on a pond in western Nottoway on Sunday (Jan. 14), a single
BRANT landed with a few hundred Canada Geese. A possible second Virginia
Piedmont record and first regional record.

The bird was still present Monday (Jan. 15) at the pond behind the hospital
with the other geese and ducks.
