I hope yesterday isn't an omen for me for the rest of 2004.
After reading of all the sightings of the Black-throated Gray warbler, we
started out with high hopes of seeing her either at the "first showing"
(a.m.) or the "2nd showing" (around 2:00 p.m.) As we arrived at around
12:30 p.m., I accosted a couple of birders with THE question: "Have you
seen it?" They had, just 20 minutes prior, so I began searching the area
they indicated. Coming up empty, I and several others began converging
on the Pavillion where we were kind of guaranteed a sighting around 2:00
p.m. by the original discoverer of the bird. (Sorry, I forgot his name.)
So, after we had stood around for a couple of hours waiting, I decided
to take a potty break. When I returned and asked if anyone had seen
anything, I got the answer, "Just a golden eagle." "Hah, oh sure," I
said. "No, really!!", they said; "Right overhead!" Well, whaddaya know.
So, I stayed around until 3:00 p.m. at which time my very hungry
non-birding husband began making noises about the buffet I had promised
him for coming out on this latest hunt. I left having secured promises
of postings if the warbler showed up. Now, since I haven't read any, I
can only conclude that she didn't show up in the afternoon; and, since
no one has mentioned her for today, does this mean she may have left us
already?
