During a brief stop at the west end of Lake Brittle this afternoon (12/28),
I observed what I thought was a Turkey Vulture in a tree along the shore.
When he turned towards me, I discovered it was actually a juvenile Bald
Eagle. When I approached him to take a photo, he flew off towards the east,
so I drove around the lake to the dam, hoping he might have landed there.
From the parking area near the dam, I spotted a large bird in a tree along
the north shore. That bird turned out to be an adult Bald Eagle and right
below him in an adjacent tree was another adult. They stayed for a half
hour after my arrival before departing. Other birds spotted on the lake
included newly arrived Buffleheads as well as the regular Mallards, Ring
Billed Gulls and Canada Geese. A juvenile Bald Eagle was also in a tree
near my yard on Saturday (I guess it could be the same one as the lake
bird). I didn't get a good view through the rain at that time and thought
he was a Turkey Vulture until seeing him clearly at the lake today.
