I did my weekly survey and monitored nest boxes on the King's
Highway/Telegraph Road side of Huntley Meadows today. I did not have as
great a day as Dave Boltz did, but still picked up some respectable birds.
I looked and listened for Dave's Kentucky Warbler (nice photo Dave!), but
with no luck. However, a singing Bay-breasted Warbler in the first meadow
was a nice consolation prize. I started out at the parking lot at 6:15 and
instantly heard my first of the year Acadian Flycatcher. Three of the four
Acadians I heard were between the parking lot and maintenance building.
When I got to the first meadow, I was greeted by three singing Indigo
Buntings and a host of Common Yellowthroats. Then I heard and found the
Bay-breasted Warbler just off the little unmaintained path that runs along
the right side of the meadow. I heard my first Great Crested Flycatcher
soon after that. The Pond Trail rewarded me with a Blue-headed Vireo. I
was thrilled to see that the Yellow-breasted Chats have returned to the
woodcock meadow. I found the Prothonotary Warbler near the water control
structure where park volunteer Melina Tye has placed some nest boxes for
them.
It looks like the bluebird nest boxes are being dominated by Tree Swallows.
These birds do not seem to have suffered the misfortunes as Fred's Tree
Swallows. Several breeding pairs are on eggs as is a Carolina Chickadee pair
at the maintenance building box.
