Last October and November, Coastal VA Wildlife Observatory conducted the
Baywatch Waterbird Migration Survey daily from a 30 foot high bluff on
Chesapeake Bay just a mile north of Kiptopeke on State property not open to the
public. We are going to do a few late winter and spring surveys as well and
the first was conducted today.
It was only 29 degrees at the start, but winds were light. Highlights
included a spectacular assemblage of 3240 Horned Grebes, a Red-necked Grebe, a
male Harlequin Duck, 41 Common Loons, 317 Tundra Swans, 13 Brant, 48
White-winged Scoters, 7 Oystercatchers...and a nice bonus American Woodcock.
If anyone is interested in helping with these morning surveys...it's
mainly scanning the water with a scope and binoculars...please contact me
directly.
