Howdy all,
Drove over to Staunton to try for the Cackling Goose amidst the 400
or so others and was successful, but it took about 25 minutes to find
it. The bird is smaller than the rest, but the notable distinguishing
feature to me was the almost non-existent neck. Once I saw that it
was pretty easy, and of course the much slighter bill. Out of
curiosity has anyone taken a stab as to the sub-species on this bird.
I make it as a Branta hutchinsii hutchinsii. Any other thoughts?
Oh, as to other birds, failed to find harrier or owls, but did come
upon White-crowned Sparrows and White-throated Sparrows. At my house
in Charlottesville I have had a few Red-breasted Nuthatches at the
feeders. Everything else is pretty typical.
