Hiked from Wolf Gap to Big Schloss along the VA/WV border today with students.
Spectacular views and fall colors on a gorgeous day.The 2-mile trail passes
through oak forest the whole way, climbing the mountain and along the
ridge-top, with a stunning 360 degree view at the end at Big Schloss. Not many
birds, and the only raptor we saw there was a turkey vulture.
Also, along the way, from route 55 through Zepp over North Mtn to Back Rd to
Columbia Furnace to Wolf Gap we saw two kestrels, a sharp-shinned hawk, a
red-tail, great views of two groups of turkeys (about a dozen each), and 8
great blue herons at a rainbow trout farm.
